2024 NFL season Preview : The start of the new NFL season has been something that both players and fans have been looking forward to.
There’s much to keep an eye on, including an NFL game being played on a new continent, a club aiming to make history, and a new batch of quarterbacks.
The following is something to watch for in the forthcoming NFL season:
Champions from one year to the next?
This season, all eyes will be on Kansas City. Not simply as a result of Taylor Swift, however.
This season, the Chiefs have the chance to make NFL history by trying to become the first club to win three straight Super Bowl victories.
With three championships in the last five seasons, the Chiefs—headed by head coach Andy Reid, quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and tight end Travis Kelce—are the NFL’s gold standard for success.
Even with the previous year’s triumph and the addition of another Lombardi Trophy to the collection, Reid and company may still aim higher.
The team’s strong defence, which was led by defensive tackle Chris Jones and coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, carried a major role in last year’s victory over the Washington Commanders and Minnesota Vikings, who both missed the playoffs, with just 39 touchdowns scored during the regular season.
Reid and general manager Brett Veach have therefore worked to revitalise the offence in order to support Mahomes and an ageing Kelce.
They selected speedster Xavier Worthy in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft and signed wide receiver Marquise Brown as a free agent. At the 2024 NFL Combine, the Texas graduate established a record with a time of 4.21 seconds for the 40-yard dash.
The onus will be on Mahomes and Reid to revitalise the offence and work magic once more with this extra assistance.
Despite their achievements, Mahomes feels they still need to get better as the new season progresses.
“I don’t believe you’re thinking about last year too much. The 28-year-old quarterback told reporters before to the season opener, “You’re so focused on trying to get better, and we’re playing the best of the best Week 1.” “We’re going to assess our situation.
“Early in the season, we must go out there and play our best football. Being our best is the only thing we can do. That is what it will take to win, and we will need to reflect on our errors, adapt on the sidelines, and go out there and find a way to defeat a very skilled football club.
The Chiefs are the clear favourite to win the Super Bowl, just like they have been in previous years. Given their recent performance, who’s to say history won’t be made?
new faces
There are instances when a rookie class is loaded with skill at a specific position. There were many promising quarterbacks in the 2024 NFL Draft class.
The April draft saw the selection of six quarterbacks, with former USC standout Caleb Williams going first overall and taken by the Chicago Bears.
For years, Williams has been regarded by many as a transcendent talent, and there has been much anticipation for his entry into the league. One of the primary topics of discussion during this offseason’s “Hard Knocks” series, which offered behind-the-scenes coverage of Chicago’s preparations for the next season, was the 22-year-old’s transition to life in the NFL.
Williams became the first rookie from Chicago to be selected one of the eight captains for the following season because of his early effect on the Bears.
Additionally, his veteran colleagues are impressed with how well he has adapted to life in the NFL.
The Bears wide receiver DJ Moore stated, “I mean, you can’t do anything but respect that and want him to be a captain for you when you come to work every day like he did and go through the things that he had to grow through, especially against the defence.”
Following an outstanding preseason, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels, the second overall pick, was already anointed the team’s starting quarterback for Week 1. However, things are different for Drake Maye, who the New England Patriots chose with the third choice; instead, the team has decided to put veteran Jacoby Brissett at quarterback to begin the season.
While No. 10 pick JJ McCarthy’s rookie campaign for the Minnesota Vikings has already been cut short after suffering a season-ending knee injury in the preseason, Michael Penix Jr., selected eighth, will also serve as the backup for the Atlanta Falcons following the signing of Kirk Cousins on a large contract in the offseason.
fresh ground
This season is no different from previous ones in that the NFL is continuously seeking methods to increase its reach.
The Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles will play the first-ever regular season game in South America on Friday in São Paulo, Brazil, as part of the 2024 campaign.
Munich, Germany will host one game, and three games—two at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and one at Wembley Stadium—will take place in London.
This implies that NFL games will now have taken place on five of the world’s seven continents.
