Boxing in the Paris 2024 Olympics: Preeti Pawar, Jaismine Lamboria, and Amit Panghal eliminated
Amit Panghal of India was defeated by Patrick Chinyemba of Zambia on Tuesday in the North Paris Arena, resulting in Panghal’s elimination from the men’s 51kg boxing competition at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Jaismine Lamboria and Preeti Pawar also lost their battles later in the day and were eliminated from the competition, thus it was a difficult day for the Indian fighters.
Panghal, who advanced to the gold medal round of the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham by defeating Chinyemba 5-0, found it difficult to overcome the lanky Zambian this time around and lost by a 4-1 split decision.
Chinyemba, the third-seeded fighter and two-time African champion, effectively utilized his height advantage and deft movement to fend off Panghal’s blows while delivering some of his own.
The Indian boxer, who has competed in two Olympics, was defeated in the opening two rounds after being unable to counter the Zambian’s sting-and-flee tactic. Panghal was obliged to attack in the last round in an attempt to change the tide, but Chinyemba shown a great deal of maturity to win the match.
Subsequently, Jaismine Lamboria withdrew from the women’s 57kg division following her defeat in the round of 32 against Nesthy Petecio of the Philippines, a previous world champion and Tokyo 2020 silver medallist.
Jaismine attempted to utilize her significant height advantage against Petecio in an attempt to emulate Chinyemba from the Panghal bout.
But Jaismine’s plan was foiled by the Filipino boxer’s sheer speed, which shown in both of her ringside maneuvers and dodges. By a unanimous vote of five to one, Petecio prevailed over the Indian, who was having trouble connecting her blows with her jabs and hooks.
Jaismine is a bronze medallist in the 60kg event at the Commonwealth Games and often competes in that weight class.
Jaismine attempted to regain the quota, but after Parveen Hooda’s ban cost India the women’s 57kg boxing Paris 2024 title, she dropped a weight class.
She was chosen to represent India in the boxing competition at the current Summer Games after she was successful in obtaining the quota at the World Olympic Boxing Qualifiers in Bangkok in June.
On the same day, Preeti Pawar’s campaign in the women’s 54kg category concluded. In her first fight, the 20-year-old Indian defeated Vo Thi Kim Anh of Vietnam; however, in the pre-quarterfinals, she was defeated by Colombian Yeni Arias.
After a hard-fought battle, Arias, a previous Pan American Games champion and silver medallist at the world championships, defeated the Indian kid by a 3-2 split decision.
At Tokyo 2020, the Colombian boxer participated in the 57kg class and advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to Petecio—the same boxer who had earlier in the day knocked out Jaismine.
Following the trio’s departure on Tuesday, India will have three active boxing contests at Paris 2024.
In the women’s 50kg division, Nikhat Zareen has already prevailed in her round of 32 match. Meanwhile, bronze medallists from Tokyo 2020 in the 75kg women’s division and the 71kg men’s division, Lovlina Borgohain, will begin their campaigns in the pre-quarterfinals.
