The American women’s basketball team defeated Nigeria in the quarterfinals, putting them just two victories away from an eighth straight gold medal. Australia will play them in the semifinals; they just defeated Serbia 85-67.

Stars Breanna Stewart and A’ja Wilson have been the two greatest players in the competition, even though the entire US team has been performing at a level beyond its rivals. Both players scored in double digits in each of the remaining two group stage games. Although neither player led Team USA in scoring in the third game against Germany (Jackie Young, 19), the United States had already guaranteed a trip to the quarterfinals by that point. Wilson and Stewart did not play their typical minutes.
